Miscanthus sinensis Purpurascens
Flame Grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Purpurascens') is grown for its changing foliage that emerges green in spring and dances in hues of reds and maroons into summer. Large creamy tassels sprout above the plant late summer as the leaves turn more vibrant shades of orange and red. Miscanthus 'Purpurascens' attracts birds and butterflies and will do wonderfully wherever it's planted with at least partial sunlight. Drought tolerant and cold hardy, this ornamental grass needs little attention after establishment.

Questions & AnswersAsk a Question
what time of year should flame grass be planted
Really, it can be planted any time of year. As long as it's planted in the appropriate hardiness zones and the soil is workable and not frozen. But spring and fall are the ideal times to plant, when temperatures aren't as extreme and they'll have more time to establish roots in the ground before harsh weather conditions come.
Is this grass a perennial in zone 7? Is it deer resistant? Thanks!
Yes, flame grass is a perennial and very hardy, down to zone 4. And it's also deer resistant!
